Who Are We?

We are a coalition of community organizations, activists, and leaders who are deeply concerned with the future of our county. We might have different objectives, experiences, values, and voices but we stand shoulder to shoulder with each other in Kern County’s future .

We organize our neighbors, coworkers, and peers from all across the county to improve living conditions in Kern County. The sum of our organizing strives to improve our air and water supplies, build safer neighborhoods with street lights and sidewalks, and to receive quality government services that allow us to thrive.

We believe we have a plan to help everyday families live healthy, safe, and prosperous lives in Kern County.

Our neighbors face mental health episodes and scarce resources, which snowballs into unsafe situations for families and first responders. Families face food insecurities or become unhoused for various reasons.

All the while, we have a county governing board who have added nearly a billion dollars to the county’s financial balance sheet while the quality of life for Kern County residents continues to deteriorate.

That is why on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021, three community activists from our coalition filed paperwork as proponents to qualify a ballot measure that limits the terms for the Board of Supervisors to two terms on the ballot in the near future.

Kern residents deserve change that puts working families first and we know this current election model isn’t serving who it’s intended to serve: the people of Kern. A new election model is needed to elect new county leadership with bold, fresh ideas and who are inspired by public input to provide solutions to the issues we face.

Why Term Limits

The election system that elected the current board does not represent the true make-up of Kern County. It places entrenched politicians in positions of power and quickly they become out-of-touch. Something is wrong if they believe their budget structure and ballooning coffers help families sleep better at night.

We believe term limits are the solution because:

  • The office of the U.S. President and across the country we see state governorships, state assembly, state senate public offices, and even some local government agencies, all have term limits
  • Responsive leaders must prove their public service record in a given time frame of term limits
  • We can vote in fresh ideas, and avoid situations where entrenched politicians only listen to a selected few people and can lead to them feeling invincible as long as they make the few powerful groups happy
  • As long as you have powerful friends with deep pockets, we will never achieve fair representation
  • Mismanagement of funds and lack of accountability is and will continue to hurt residents
  • It encourages democracy, voting rights, and holds politicians accountable to the people
